Baby Swimming from age 8 weeks.
We use the BIrthlight method of baby swimming, where classes are baby led rather than adult led.
parents learn how to read their baby’s cues and ‘listen’ to what they want to do. They are allowed to explore their aquatic world, just as they would explore on land. With teachers guidance, even the most nervous parent can learn to enjoy the unique experience being in the water can be together with their babies and toddlers.
Beginner classes consist of 1 teacher and 1 assistant per 6 children. More advanced classes have no more than 8 children but still have 1 teacher and 1 assistant if required. Children learn to have fun in the water while still learning the skills required to get them swimming.
Play is important and in the early stages this is encouraged to build confidence.
Lessons consist of ten half hour sessions culminating in a test on week 10 appropriate to the level the pupil has attained.
What else do we do?
Club sessions develop swimming skills and fitness further and prepare children for the day if/when they choose to go on to join a competitive swimming club. We offer 2 sessions a week, and children can either do one or both sessions.
Alternative classes include Rookie lifeguard and Mermaid swimming for the more adventurous!
Fins Swim School was started in May 2007 by Lesley Wilde.. Lesley is a world Masters swimming champion and world record holder with over 35 years competitive swimming experience under her belt, and is still an active masters swimmer, herself training 3+ times a week with the local swimming club, so well knowledged in all aspects of swimming laws.
Having worked for local authority swimming lessons, Lesley felt she couldn’t give her best to the children who were nervous in the pool. Classes were too big and there were no assistants to help, She set up the swim school to have smaller classes and more support in the water for the children, so that even nervous swimmers could feel part of the groups.
This year sees the swim school reaching its 10 year anniversary, and in that time we have seen others, including local authority, offer the smaller classes and format that we originally set up.
